MFL - French

INTENT

Our aim is to deliver a comprehensive language curriculum that empowers every child to reach their full potential. We achieve this by following well-structured lessons aligned with the National Curriculum (2014), fostering enjoyment, understanding, and confidence in learning French while nurturing a passion for the subject.

Kapow Primary’s French Programme is our main curriculum. It inspires a love for languages and promotes cultural awareness. We aim to help students confidently communicate in French, both in writing and speaking, for real-life purposes. Our curriculum builds a solid foundation for language learning, encouraging students to apply their skills to learn additional languages, deepen their understanding of English, and open doors to future studies and careers abroad. It supports students in meeting the national curriculum’s Key Stage 2 attainment targets (there are no specific Key Stage 1 language targets).

IMPLEMENTATION

Through Kapow Primary’s French scheme, pupils are given opportunities to communicate for practical purposes around familiar subjects and routines. The scheme provides balanced opportunities for communication in both spoken and written French, although in Year 3 the focus is on developing oral skills, before incorporating written French in Year 4 and beyond. The Kapow Primary scheme is a spiral curriculum, with key skills and vocabulary revisited repeatedly with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to revise and build on their previous learning. Cross-curricular links are included throughout our French units, allowing children to make connections and apply their language skills to other areas of their learning.

IMPACT

Through Kapow Primary’s French scheme, pupils make progress in their ability to communicate in French for practical purposes, focusing initially on oral skills in Year 3 before incorporating written French in Year 4 and beyond. The spiral curriculum ensures that key skills and vocabulary are revisited with increasing complexity, reinforcing learning and enabling pupils to build on prior knowledge. As a result, students develop a strong foundation in both spoken and written French. Cross-curricular links throughout the units also enhance their learning, allowing them to connect their language skills with other subjects, deepening their understanding and application of French in a broader context.
