Music

INTENT

Our aim is to provide a music curriculum which will enable each child to reach their full potential in music, encourage children to enjoy singing, composing and performing and provide children with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience both within and outside of school.  It is our intent that music is an enjoyable and engaging learning experience.  We encourage all children to participate in a variety of musical activities, through which we aim to build their confidence. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm, follow a beat and listen to and appreciate different forms and genres of music.  Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music.

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
  • Be taught to sing, create and compose music
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Sing-Up scheme of work is used from Year 1 - 6 to ensure a wide exposure to different genres of music, with lots of practical opportunities to explore and develop as musicians and singers.  Throughout this topic-based scheme, pupils are actively involved in using and developing their singing voices, using body percussion and whole body actions, and learning to handle and play classroom instruments effectively to create and express their own and others’ music. This provides them with the opportunity to become increasingly confident in their musical ability.  The curriculum is complimented by the whole school use of Sing Up resources and through enrichment opportunities utilising LoveTheatreArts Ltd as well as Whole Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET) and Whole Class Instrumental Teaching (WCIT).  Our music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate.  This is embedded in the classroom activities as well as weekly singing assemblies, various concerts and performances.

Children in Early Years are taught using the Sing Up planning and resources as well as cross curricular singing linked to topics and areas of learning.   This enables the children to increase their repertoire of songs as they join in with singing as a whole class and in groups.  They are encouraged to tap our rhythms and keep the beat to music using classroom percussion.  The children in Early Years have access to outdoor music areas and are encouraged to use the keyboard and drum machine to make up their own rhythms and songs.

IMPACT

Through our music curriculum, every pupil across the school cultivates a genuine interest and passion for music. They gain a deeper appreciation for diverse musical cultures and genres, while developing an understanding of the emotional impact music can have on themselves and others. Pupils build a broad range of knowledge and skills, which they can apply throughout their journey in school and beyond. Engaging with our music program enhances their confidence, self-expression, creativity, and communication skills, empowering them to express themselves in meaningful ways.
