Physical Education

INTENT

At WPA, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed to inspire all children to lead active, healthy, and fulfilling lives. We believe that PE is essential for developing not only physical skills but also cognitive, social, and emotional abilities. We aim to develop physical co-ordination, strength, agility, balance, mobility and skills that extend competency within individual activities and across a variety of team sports.

The REAL PE curriculum is designed to engage every child and provide them with the physical literacy, emotional, and thinking skills needed to succeed in PE, sport, and life.

IMPLEMENTATION

Real PE is a unique, child-centred approach. It transforms how we teach PE to engage and challenge every child in primary school. It focuses on the fundamental movement skills of a child's physical development: Agility, Balance, Coordination.

Our curriculum develops the whole child, each term there is a multi-ability focus: Personal, Social, Cognitive, Creative, Physical and Health and Fitness.

Class teachers teaches the children from the Real PE curriculum each week. In addition to this, every class has an hour PE lesson with a specialist sports coach where they are able to transfer the skills they are developing in Real PE into more competitive sports.

Annually, we hold a Health and Hobby fortnight to educate and promote healthy lifestyles which incorporates physical activity and first aid principles. Children engage in different workshops, activities and sports across this period which culminates with our whole-school Sports day.  Additionally, by the time children leave KS2, they will represent school in a range of sporting festivals and tornaments both in school, locally and at national level.  Furthermore, children in Y1-6, will engage in a series of intensive, swimming lessons for a period of at least 6 weeks.

At WPA we pride ourselves on our commitment to swimming by providing access to high-quality swimming instruction on our school grounds through the use of a pop-up pool.  This not only allows school to quality assure the standard of swimming instruction but it also allows us to maximise curriculum time by removng the need to commute to local leisure centres.

IMAPCT

Our PE curriculum provides all children with the opportunity to engage in mainstream sports that they can confidently pursue in secondary school and beyond. In addition, we introduce a range of alternative sports, such as badminton, to broaden their experiences and deepen their understanding of fundamental movements. This exposure enhances their tactical knowledge and skills across various sports. We believe our PE curriculum fosters a lifelong passion for sport and healthy living, as it instills enjoyment, builds confidence, and inspires a positive attitude toward physical activity from an early age.
